Growing up in Orland, I never imagined I'd see the news business transform as dramatically as it has over the past 35 years — from literally cutting and pasting stories onto the page to watching AI fundamentally reshape how we gather and report the news.

Next Thursday, July 3, at 10 a.m., I’ll be the guest speaker at the Friends of the Orland Free Library meeting in the library Community Room (333 Mill Street). I’ll share a few stories and a broader perspective on how journalism has evolved, and where it’s headed next.

I've been lucky to work for small-town papers and big-city dailies, and to help start GeekWire in Seattle during the tech boom. But what draws me back to local news — and specifically back to Orland — is a love for this town and a deep appreciation for the role of community journalism, even as the tools and technologies change.

It would be great to catch up with some Orland.News readers there. (My colleague Steve Nordbye is planning to attend, so you can say “Hey Steve!” in person.) See more details on Facebook and in the Friends of the Orland Free Library invite below. Hope you can make it.
